I am Jodie L. Groener and I am a freelance writer from the Eastern Cape.
My journey with the Jakes Gerwel Foundation started in 2021, when I was part of the mentorship programme for prose writers. And what a ride it has been ever since! After the programme it took a while to get into motion. I had to find my niche and there were mentors standing by me to pop a quick question to.
But a great thing happened. Paulet House Stories was born and soon all the previous mentees had somewhere they could gather and tell their stories, much like at the Paulet House in Somerset East.
This is where so many opportunities and valuable information for the community of writers are available, as well as support for each other’s work and dreams. Each week we read amazing art and celebrate accomplishments.
And this is where I started to own my voice as a writer and developed confidence in my own abilities.
I write short stories, columns (published on Netwerk24 and in newspapers Beeld and Die Burger), poetry and screenplays.
I do translations and transcription projects too. Very interesting indeed.
