• Colorado Prize for Poetry

    The Colorado Prize for Poetry is an international poetry book manuscript contest established in 1995. Each year’s prizewinner receives a $2 500 honorarium and publication of their book by the Center for Literary Publishing. The winner will be announced by May 2026.

    Rattle wanted to do for chapbooks what they've done for poems with the Rattle Poetry Prize—provide a fair, fun, and friendly way to make the most of what they offer. Every year, three winners will receive $5000, 500 copies and distribution to Rattle’s 8000+ subscribers.

  • Driftwood Press Short Story Contest 2026

    Only fiction will be accepted. The word limit is 1000 to 5000 words. A standard, 12-point font and single-spacing is preferred. Submit works written in English only, no translations. Please submit your manuscript in a .doc, .docx, or PDF format. The work must not have been previously published.

  • African Poetry Digital Portal: Digital Humanities Grant

    The African Poetry Digital Portal Project funded by a grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation invites proposals from scholars and researchers for the African Poetry Digital Humanities Grant. These grants support Digital Humanities research in African Poetry. Applicants are encouraged to make use of the resources of the Portal, and in so doing expand the impact of the Portal in the broader community of African Digital Humanities scholarship.

    Applications for next year's PEN it Down residency is open! PEN is an international organisation that protects and promotes writers’ rights worldwide. With the PEN it Down residency, the Jakes Gerwel Foundation, PEN Afrikaans, and PEN South Africa invite writers and poets with valid PEN memberships to apply for this writers’ residency, which guarantees uninterrupted writing time in the creative and inspiring space of Paulet House. Membership is not compulsory at the time of application.

    The Hechinger Report is looking for stories that combine compelling narratives from classrooms and campuses with smart, original analyses of national education issues. Stories should consider the research and draw from the knowledge of experts and affected communities. Hechinger Report share many of their stories with their mainstream media partners, so stories must be written for a general interest audience and free of jargon.

  • PEN Afrikaans Translation Fund

    This fund’s main objective is to promote Afrikaans literature internationally by generating more translations and translated publications of noteworthy Afrikaans works. Applications for funding will be considered twice a year. The two deadlines for applications are 15 May and 15 November of each calendar year.

  • The Bath Novel Award 2026

    The Bath Novel Award is a £5 000 international prize for adult and YA manuscripts in every genre. The prize is open to unagented writers, who are unpublished, self-published or independently published without advance.   • Brussels to Karoo

    Brussels to Karoo is a residency programme offered by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation and Passa Porta International Writers House in Brussels, Belgium. As the name suggests, Flemish and South African writers are brought together in the Karoo in KwaNojoli. This project aims to stimulate the exchange of ideas between Flemish and South African writers, broaden horizons, and enrich and expand the respective literatures.

    The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and M-Net Channels’ intensive mentorship programme offers talented, emerging screenwriters the opportunity to hone their writing skills and learn from experienced and productive writers in the television and film industry.

  • Bosberg Book Writing

    Although there is no cut-off date for applications, the final selection is made in November in the preceding year.

     

    Emerging writers are invited to apply in one of three categories: novels, short stories, or poetry. Upon completion of this intensive development programme, the writer is assisted in submitting their manuscript for publication to an appropriate publisher.
