She is in conversation with Ronelda Kamfer about the story of Lea Floris who, after making a naïve decision that changes the course of her life, runs away from the world of poor farmworkers in the Overberg.

But above all, it is a mother’s attempt to make sense of the reckless, unkind world her daughter is now entering. Cintaine Schutte, who recently starred in Marita’s Die dinge van ’n kind, talks to the author.

Ronnie Kasrils joined the Struggle after the Sharpeville-massacre. For almost three decades, he worked in exile as an underground uMkhonto we Sizwe-operative, serving the ANC and SACP’s cause. After 1994, he was appointed by the new government in several ministerial positions. Anthony Butler prompts Ronnie about his book, International Brigade Against Apartheid: Secrets of the War that Liberated South Africa, detailing the stories of people who were secretly involved in the liberation struggle.

Bronwyn Davids’ memoir, Dearest Lansdowne, describes the impact of forced removals on her community. Shana Fife’s Ougat recounts the unsettling tale of her growing up on the Cape Flats. Bronwyn’s first-hand experience of disenfranchisement links to Shana’s exploration of being uprooted. Both authors are journalists and attended the 2019 mentorship programme for aspiring authors, presented by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation and NB Publishers. Francois Bloemhof will interview them.

Award-winning poet Ronelda S Kamfer’s debut novel will leave no reader indifferent. Kompoun tells the story of the friendship between a group of cousins, hurled together in a struggle for survival in a cruel world. As they try to sever ties with the older generation, they discover that it’s impossible to escape the ties that bind families. Ronelda worked on Kompoun during the Foundation and PEN Afrikaans’s writers’ residence in 2019.

In Joining the Dots, Jonathan Ancer and Chris Whitfield examine Gordhan’s stature as a public figure. Some see him as a beacon of hope while others regard him as the enemy. The authors will share their views about Gordhan’s position in South African politics, and about what happened behind the scenes during one of the most extraordinary periods in our recent history.

In But he speaks so well, Ivan Johnson’s gripping memoir, the author describes his experiences of growing up on the Cape Flats, joining the Struggle and achieving success in a lily-white advertising world. Ivor Price conducts the conversation.

While working on the book, Kirby was a writer in residence at Paulet House in Somerset East, hosted by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation and PEN Afrikaans.

In Black Consciousness – A Love Story, the son of Mamphela Ramphele and the late Steve Biko, Hlumelo, pens the tale of his famous parents’ love for each other. It also tells the story of how the Black Consciousness Movement was started in the 1970s by a group of principled, ambitious students at Natal University. Their message to black people of autonomy and self-love, accelerated extraordinary changes in South Africa. But how meaningful are concepts pertaining to black identity and Ubuntu in the country today? What would Steve Biko’s verdict be if he was still alive?
