Teachers have the most fascinating, difficult, and important job on the planet, and their workdays are filled with stories. Yet teachers seldom appear in fiction. This annual contest was created to inspire great stories about teachers and the rich and crazy world of schools.

The winning story will be published in A Public Space’s print edition and the author will receive $1 000.

The story must be a work of fiction between 6 to 499 words. The protagonist or narrator must be a K-12 teacher. Submissions should be primarily in English.

The submission deadline is the 1st of September 2024.

"Sestigduisend boeke en hordes sakke later, morge se grondpad ry agter plaaskinders aan, en ons is hiér. Hier waarvan ek so lank gedroom het. Die kinders gaan nou nie meer net een keer ’n jaar by die hek vir ons wag as ons met poppe en props en boeke en wat nog by hulle kom kuier nie. Nee, want met die Greater Stellenbosch Trust en die Social Employment Fund agter ons, kan die Stigting vanjaar dertig jongmense in diens neem wat elke liewe skooldag by die kinders gaan wees. Jong, slim mense vir wie daar nie werk is nie."

Only 5 days left to register for the Oude Leeskamer writers' residency!

Submit a letter of motivation, a short author biography, detailed overview of your writing project, and examples of current and past writing for a chance to write for two weeks in Stellenbosch this November.

Only applications from former or current Paulet House residents will be considered.

Application deadline: 16 August 2024

Candidates must confirm availability for the set dates when applying: 11 to 25 November 2024.

Stuur jou kortverhaal van 3000 woorde teen 12 Augustus 2024 aan anker@sun.ac.za om moontlik een van die 5 gelukkige deelnemers te wees. Suksesvolle inskrywings sal teen 2 September 2024 in kennis gestel word.

Everyone has a story to tell. What’s yours?

The Anthology Personal Memoir Competition is open to original and previously unpublished memoirs in the English language by writers of any nationality, living anywhere in the world. Memoirs submitted must not exceed a maximum of 1 500 words.

The winner will receive €500 and the chance to see their work published in a future issue of Anthology.

Entry fee: €15

Deadline: 31 August 2024

Die kursus is gemik op enigiemand wat graag ’n kinderverhaal wil skryf. Die begin datum is Maandag die 12de Augustus 2024 en die koste is R2 500.
