Every year, the singers / songwriters bring new energy, sounds and homegrown African rhythms to the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Paulet House in Somerset East. 2022 was no exception. We will never forget the many goosebump moments while the group rehearsed and performed. Keep note of these young stars, they are going places: Carlo Fortune, Kele M, Kerischne Pheiffer, Noxolo Kheswa and Spha Dlakwe. Applause to mentors Frazer Barry and Zolani Mahola for your endless passion! Thank you to our valued partner – the Suidoosterfees. Watch out for future performances of this wonderful group organised by the festival.

Ons is ontsaglik trots op Henque Heymans wat pas bekroon is met die ATKV Woordveertje 2022 vir Beste Dramateks. Sy aangrypende drama, “Oom Bey, my pa”, handel oor Beyers Naudé en sy dogter, Liesel Naudé, se herinneringe aan hom. Henque was verlede jaar deel van die Jakes Gerwel Stigting se mentorskapsprogram vir opkomende dramaturge, waartydens hy aan die teks gewerk het onder leiding van Abduragman Adams. Die NATi Jong Sterre projek is ’n gesamentlike projek deur die Jakes Gerwel Stigting, Suidoosterfees, Teksmark en die Kunstekaap. As jy "Oom Bey, my pa" by die Suidoosterfees misgeloop het, kan jy dit nog by die US Toyota Woordfees of Momentum Beleggings Aardklop gaan kyk. Ira Blanckenberg en Robert Hindley is in die rolverdeling.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that the award-winning South African writers- Dumisani Hlatswayo and Sindiswa Busuku – were selected to share the residency programme of the Jakes Gerwel Foundation and Passa Porta International House of Literature in Brussels with the Belgian writers, Fleur Pierets and Yousra Benfquih.
In 2017 Dumisani Hlatswayo’s second novel Imibala Yothando won the Sanlam Literature Award for Youth Literature. His work is also prescribed for schools.
Sindiswa Busuku debuted with Loud and Yellow Laughter, winner of the 2018 Ingrid Jonker prize for poetry.
Fleur Pierets is an award-winning artist and writer as well as an LGBTQ+ activist. She combines different media such as photography and performance arts with writing.
Besides being a jurist in international human rights, Yousra Benfquih is also an author, columnist, poet and spoken-word artist.

Die Jakes Gerwel Stigting is trots op Crystal Donna-Roberts, Engela Ovies, Loit Sôls en Thérèse Hulme wie se boeke vars van die drukkers is. Crystal neem in 2021 deel aan die Stigting / NB-Uitgewers se mentorskapsprogram vir opkomende skrywers. “Speurder Sammie” is haar debuut vir jong lesers. Engela Ovies wat in 2019 aan dieselfde kursus deelgeneem het, se tweede boek, “Flora”, volg op fluks op haar sterk debuut, “Draairivier”.
Loit was vanjaar deel van die Stigting en PEN Afrikaans se residensieprogram waar hy aan “Moerstaal” geskaaf het. Thérèse het op haar beurt vir die Stigting ’n narratiewe leer-projek oor jare heen by Grassy Park Sekondêr aangebied. Van die jong digters se werke is nou opgeneem in “Praat jy! – idees vir die skep van ’n skryfkultuur in die klas.”
