SUMMARY:The Art of Writing Memoir: Fourth Series with Denis Hirson
DESCRIPTION:Denis Hirson is back with four new memoir-writing workshops running from September to December. \nThe Jacana Literary Foundation\, together with Denis Hirson\, is bringing back its highly successful memoir-writing workshops for a fourth time\, but in a different way. Across four evenings\, one each in September\, October\, November and December 2026\, Denis will share his expertise in a series of engaging 90-minute online workshops. Each workshop session will focus on a different memoir before engaging in discussion with participants. \nEach workshop will take place on Zoom from 19:00 to 20:30 SAST. The total cost of all four workshops is R1500. DESCRIPTION:The Sillerman Prize is awarded annually\, with submissions open between 15 September to 1 December. \nThe Prize: \nThe Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poetry is awarded annually to an African poet who has not yet published a collection of poetry. The winner receives USD $1000 and book publication through the University of Nebraska Press. \nThe Sillerman Editorial Team\, including Kwame Dawes\, Chris Abani\, Matthew Shenoda\, John Keene\, Gabeba Baderoon\, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers\, Aracelis Girmay\, and Mahtem Shiferraw will judge. \nEligibility \nThe Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets will only accept “first book” submissions from African writers who have not published a book-length poetry collection. This includes self-published books if they were sold online\, in stores\, or at readings. Writers who have edited and published an anthology or a similar collection of other writers’ work remain eligible. \nAn “African writer” is taken to mean someone who was born in Africa\, who is a national or resident of an African country\, or whose parents are African. \nOnly poetry submissions in English can be considered. Work translated from another language to English is accepted\, but a percentage of the prize will be awarded to the translator. \nNo past or present paid employees of the University of Nebraska Press\, Akashic Books\, or Amalion Press\, or current faculty\, students\, or employees at Brown University\, are eligible for the prizes. \nPoetry manuscripts should be at least 50 pages long. DESCRIPTION:The National Arts Festival 2027 will take place next year across the period of end June 2027 and early July 2027\, dates are still to be finalized. \nComplete their application form for consideration to be part of the National Arts Festival Curated Programme\, 2027. The application period is open from 06 August 2026 to 27 September 2026 23:59\, CAT. \nTheir application process is aimed at artists\, producers and creative practitioners working across artistic disciplines and genres. The application form invites applicants to submit information about either: \n\nComplete Works (Section A): A Completed Work would include works fully created\, which have had some form of public presentation\, which are ready to tour. These can be new or old works.\nWorks Currently in Development (Section B): A Work Currently in Development includes work currently in the creation stage\, and needing finalisation before the work is ready to present to an audience.\nNew Ideas (Section C): The New Ideas section is for works still in a conceptual stage.\n\nThey are largely looking for Completed Works\, or Works in Development\, for inclusion in the 2027 Festival. However\, they are very interested to hear what ideas you have and we are open to engaging with submissions for New Ideas\, especially where there is existing co-producer interest. \nApplicants should not submit more than two applications\, the Festival reserves the right to reject all applications if more than three applications are submitted. DESCRIPTION:The Nova Short Story Competition is an annual competition for budding writers of science fiction and fantasy short stories. SUMMARY:The Working Class Writers Grant
DESCRIPTION:Since 2013\, the Working Class Writers Grant has been awarded annually to speculative fiction writers who are working class\, blue-collar\, financially disadvantaged\, or homeless\, who have been historically underrepresented in speculative fiction due to financial barriers which make it hard to access the writing world. Such lack of access might include an inability to purchase a computer\, books\, and tuition\, or to attend conventions or workshops. Often\, these writers\, many of whom work more than one job\, have less time to write. The SLF seeks to bring more of these marginalized voices into speculative fiction. \nThis grant\, as with all SLF grants\, is intended to help writers working with speculative literature. Speculative literature spans the breadth of fantastic writing\, encompassing literature ranging from hard science fiction to epic fantasy\, including ghost stories\, horror\, folk and fairy tales\, slipstream\, magical realism\, and more. Any piece of literature containing a fabulist or speculative element would fall under our aegis. \nGrant Eligibility \nWhile Speculative Literature Foundation is based in America\, and some of our language below reflects that perspective\, this grant is available to international writers; please assess your own situation as appropriate for your home country. \nYou would potentially be eligible for this grant if any of the following apply: \n\nyou qualify for government assistance (food stamps\, Medicaid\, tax credits\, free school lunch) for a significant period of time\nyou live paycheck-to-paycheck\nyour parents did not go to college\nyou rely on payday loans\nyou’re currently being raised in a single parent household\nyou’re supporting yourself and paying your own way through college\nyou’ve lived at or below 200% of the poverty line for your state for at least one year\nyou’ve experienced stretches of time when food was not readily and easily available\n\nPlease note that the goal of these grants is to help as many writers as possible\, so recent winners can reapply but will be considered low-priority within a 2-year window of winning. DESCRIPTION:The Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry is an annual award of USD $1000. Established in 2015 and named for late literary philanthropist and APBF friend Glenna Luschei\, this pan-African poetry prize is the only one of its kind in the world and aims to honor and promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet. DESCRIPTION:The Evaristo Prize for African Poetry is an annual prize of USD $1500 awarded to ten poems written by an African poet. \nEligibility \nThe Prize is open to African writers. An “African writer” is taken to mean someone who was born in Africa\, who is a national or resident of an African country\, or whose parents are African. \nThe prize is open to African poets who have not yet had a full-length poetry book published at the time of submission. Self-published poetry books\, chapbooks\, and pamphlets are exempt from this stipulation. \nOnly poems written in English can be considered\, but APBF welcome poems in translation for consideration too. SUMMARY:Freedom from Torture: Poetry Competition
DESCRIPTION:Freedom from Torture’s biennial poetry competition is back\, which will be judged by the eminent novelist\, poet and Booker Prize winner Alan Hollinghurst and Poet Rachael Allen. \nThis year’s competition theme is Worlds into Words\, inspired by the journeys people carry within them – across countries\, across cultures\, and across the landscapes of memory and identity. It also reflects the experiences of survivors of torture\, whose journeys are not only physical but deeply psychological\, shaped by resilience\, loss\, and the search for belonging. \nFor many of the survivors they support\, coming to the UK as refugees means navigating not only a new place\, but a new language – finding ways to express experiences that are often difficult to put into words. This theme celebrates the many worlds all writers bring to their work: the stories\, cultures\, and perspectives that shape how we see and understand the world. \nYour poem might explore what it means to leave home\, to begin again\, or to carry multiple worlds within you. It could reflect on displacement or belonging\, silence or expression\, trauma or hope. As always\, the theme is open to interpretation – your entry should reflect what Worlds into Words means to you. \nFirst Prize: \n\nZoom mentoring session with Poet and Fitzcarraldo Editions editor Rachael Allen.\nTwo VIP tickets to our London Library Event.\nYour poem will be published in Freedom from Torture’s quarterly newsletter The Survivor\, circulated to some 26 000 supporters across the UK\, and on their website.\nYour poem will be printed in the London Library event programme\, circulated to 150 esteemed guests including authors\, poets\, publishers and celebrities.\nBook bundles for the winner and runners up.\nAll winners will have their poem featured on Freedom from Torture’s website with winners promoted on social media and promoted to press and media in the run up to the event.\n\nPoems can be submitted from anywhere in the world\, in any style\, with a preferred length limit of 40 lines\, and must be the entrant’s original work. SUMMARY:The Château de Lavigny Grant Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:The writer and literary translator’s residence is open from May to October and is able to host a maximum of six writers per session. To be eligible writers and literary translators must be published (min. one book – self published not accepted)\, playwrights and scriptwriters must be published or produced. \nWhat does the residency contain? \n\nThe writers are provided with a private room in the Chateau.\nThe residents are responsible for buying and preparing their own meals. In the evening\, an aperitif is offered by the management to the residents to allow them to get together and chat. Once a week a dinner is prepared and offered by the management.\nResidents are left in peace to work and can plan their time as they wish.\nOne public reading is organized every session where residents present their work.\nIt is possible to apply together with a spouse/partner\, but only if both are writers (or literary translators). Both should submit an application file.\nEach session lasts four weeks.\n\nWho can apply? \nA writer must have published at least one book (not self-published) in any of the following creative fields: \n\nFiction\nCreative nonfiction\nPoetry\nLiterary translation\nPlays\nScreenplays\n\nRegardless of country of origin\, the applicant must be fluent in either English or French\, as exchanges among writers from many different countries are a key feature of our residence. Residents will also interact with the public at a reading of their work in either language. \nPlease also note that the château is difficult of access for people with mobility issues. \nThe sessions last four weeks. Writers must apply for a specific session and are asked to indicate second and third choices. However\, the latter choices should be dates that would also work for the applicant. SUMMARY:Artis’s Residency Program at the Dora Maar House
DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Nancy B. Negley purchased the former residence of Dora Maar. In a five-year effort\, she rehabilitated and updated this spacious eighteenth-century\, four-story stone residence in the village of Ménerbes. Her goal was to make it a retreat for scholars\, artists\, and writers\, where they could work undisturbed on their research\, art\, or writing\, for one to two months. \nHere outstanding mid-career professionals are offered fellowships that enable them to reside in the Dora Maar House and focus on the creative aspects of their work. \nDuration of residency: \n\n1 to 2 months\n\nFees and support: \n\nThere is a $25 application fee.\nThe fellowship includes one month in residence at the Dora Maar House\, a private bedroom and bath\, and a study or studio in which to work\, express paid for round-trip travel from a fellow’s home to the Dora Maar House\, and a $1500 stipend.\n\nApplication Guidelines: \n\nThere is one Admission cycle per year\, 15 March to 15 October\, for residencies in the following year from March through November.\nA completed application questionnaire\nAn up-to-date vita (no more than 4 pages)\nA brief project description stating what you would do while you are in residence at Dora\nMaar House\, and how much time you would need to be there to accomplish your goal\nA letter of reference from your supervisor or a colleague supporting your application\nAn idea of what you will offer to the Ménerbes community while you are there\, i.e. a presentation\, a workshop\, a reading or performance\, etc.\nA photocopy of your valid passport\, for non-EU candidates\nSamples of your work\nApplications can be in French or English\nApplications are digital only\n\nApplication Deadline: 15 October 2026 \nClick here for more information

Pritchett. Their annual Short Story Prize seeks out new voices to join this distinguished literary history. \nEstablished to support and celebrate emerging literary talent\, the prize offers writers from around the world an opportunity for publication and recognition. They’re looking for previously unpublished stories of no more than 4 000 words. \nThe judges for this year’s The London Magazine Short Story Prize 2026 will be Camilla Grudova\, Tim MacGabhann and Ayşegül Savaş. \nThe winning stories will be published in future issues of The London Magazine.
