Every month, the Future Scholar Foundation host a short story competition (350 words max), with each new prompt centered around a monthly theme. This competition is for elementary and middle school students. The competition will remain open for submissions until the 28th of each month (11:59 pm), with results released on the first of every month at 8:00 am PST. Prompts will provide starters for writers.
Winners will receive the following:
December prompt:
One chilly December evening, during your family’s yearly holiday gathering, you overhear a conversation that completely unravels everything you thought you understood about your family and its history. Maybe an incriminating comment is whispered under someone’s breath, an old photograph is found, or a long-lost family member has been discovered – but this news had been kept secret from you, until now. Write a story about the moment a family secret is accidentally revealed and its immediate consequences.
International submissions are welcome. You are more than welcome to submit multiple stories each month and there is no submission fee.
All submissions before the 15th will receive free, personalized feedback that writers may use to revise and resubmit. And, sign up here for one-on-one online coaching calls with award-winning writer and Future Scholar Foundation co-founder, Nathaniel Tok.
