2025 Cape Flats Book Festival: Writers’ Workshops

Mark your calendars and save the date for the following workshops at this year’s Cape Flats Book Festival!

• Workshop Costs: Free
• Location: West End Primary School

Writers’ Workshops:

Flash Fiction Workshop with Kerry Hammerton

• Date and time: 1 February 2025 from 11:40 to 13:40
• What will be discussed: Do you want to explore the art of writing short? Generate your own flash fiction or creative non-fiction through interactive and fun exercises in this workshop.
• What to bring: Bring your notebook and pen. You’ll have the chance to write and edit one piece of flash fiction. You will also have the opportunity to submit your work for an anthology to be published in 2025.

Memoir Workshop with Sally Cranswick

• Date and time: 1 February 2025 from 13:00 to 14:10
• What will be discussed: You’ll discuss ways to turn your life story into a memoir. You’ll look at some great memoirs and think about why they work and what you love about them, and you’ll discuss some of the main elements of memoir such as character, setting, theme and structure.
• What to bring: Bring your notebook and pen so that you can do some writing exercises together with Sally Cranswick.

Writing stories for young readers and early learners with Amanda Sickle

• Date and time: 2 February 2025 from 11:50 to 12:30
• What will be discussed: Join this free writers’ workshop and learn how to write for young readers.

Poetry Workshop:

Poetry in Motion: Performance Poetry Workshop with Vusimuzi Mpofu

• Date and time: 2 February 2025 from 10:55 to 11:35
• What will be discussed: This engaging session will help you master the art of combining powerful poetry with performance, using rhythm, tone, and body language to captivate your audience.
• What to bring: Bring your notebook and pen to make notes. Through interactive exercises and group feedback, Vusimuzi will guide you in exploring how to bring your poetry to life on stage.

Return of the Songbirds & Inspire Poetry writing workshop for children with Hani du Toit

• Date and time: 2 February 2025 from 11:50 to 12:30
• What will be discussed: Bring your readers to join Hani du Toit in an engaging session of story telling that prompts their own inspired poems and stories about real world issues.
