DESCRIPTION:The AWP Writer to Writer Mentorship Program matches emerging writers with established authors for a three-month series of modules on topics such as craft\, revision\, publishing\, and the writing life. Mentors volunteer their time and receive a free one-year AWP individual membership as a token of appreciation. Writer to Writer is free of charge to mentees\, though they must be AWP members to apply. \nThe AWP Writer to Writer Mentorship Program is open to all AWP members who identify as emerging writers\, but they particularly encourage applications from those writers who have never been associated with an MFA program\, and those writing from regions\, backgrounds\, and cultures that are too often underrepresented in the literary world. \nPotential Writer to Writer mentees must be members of AWP\, but it is free to apply to and participate in the program. \nWriter to Writer runs twice per year. Die doel van Het Zuid-Afrikahuis is om verhoudings tussen Suid-Afrika en Nederland te bevorder in die breedste sin\, ook deur Spectrum. Jare lank is ’n wye reeks artikels gepubliseer: van boekresensies\, onderhoude en reisverhale tot diepgaande artikels oor voorwerpe in ’n argief\, en meningsartikels. Gewoonlik het artikels in Spectrum tussen 700 en 2500 woorde. \nIn Augustus 2026 sal ’n spesiale someruitgawe van Spectrum gepubliseer word\, wat breedweg die tema Kuns\, Kultuur en Politiek: Die kruispunt van Kuns\, Kultuur en Politiek\, sal omvat. Zuid-Afrikahuis het hierdie tema gekies vanweë die huidige internasionale relevansie daarvan. Deelnemers aan hierdie kursus sal leer hoe om ’n kinderboek te beplan en te skryf vir kinders tussen die ouderdom van agt en twaalf. \nDié ses weke lange kursus is ontwikkel deur die gesoute kinderboekskrywer en handelsmerkbestuurder\, Carina Diedericks-Hugo\, en word aangebied deur nog ’n gewilde skrywer\, Nanette van Rooyen. Hierdie is nie ’n inleidende kursus nie\, en ons beveel dit sterk aan dat deelnemers reeds ’n inleidende skryfkursus by Skryfnet of elders voltooi het wanneer hulle vir hierdie kursus inskryf. \nDie kursus is soos volg gestruktureer: \n\nWeek 1: Inleiding en oriëntering\nWeek 2: Beplanning\nWeek 3: Boublokke van ’n boeiende storielyn\nWeek 4: Skep die perfekte ruimte vir jou storie\nWeek 5: Karakterbybel\nWeek 6: Afsluiting\n\nSodra die aankoop en registrasie gefinaliseer is\, ontvang deelnemers besonderhede om aan te teken op die aanlyn leerplatform. DESCRIPTION:The 14th kykNET Silwerskerm Festival\, taking place from 19 to 22 August in Camps Bay\, Cape Town\, boasts a diverse programme that reflects the depth and variety of Afrikaans cinema. \nA total of 22 films will be screened\, comprising 17 short films (including five documentary shorts) and four feature films. Established directors and screenwriters show their craft\, while emerging filmmakers get the opportunity to enter the world of visual storytelling. Eighteen films compete in the competition\, with the winners announced on Saturday 22 August. (One feature film and two short films are not part of the competition.) \nAmong the short films are love stories – from the quirky and humorous (Twee persent) to the still forbidden and unacceptable gay love (As ek kon kies). Death is at the core of Wag ’n bietjie\, with a son who pays a stranger to sit with his mother in her dying hours\, while the descendants in ’n Poppy op die heuwel literally dig a grave in the middle of the night for a loved one so she can be laid to rest beside her mother. Violence as a theme is highlighted from different angles: a couple robbed late at night in the streets of Cape Town (Trilstraat) and a complex take on gender-based violence (Verwerking). The search for acceptance and owning your identity or pursuing dreams is illuminated in Genoeg\, Short Back & Sides and Yaadt Queen. And Change flips a coin and says\, no matter how it lands – heads or tails – we are becoming a cashless society and the days of change are numbered… something that was so much a part of our communities and lives. \nThe makers of short documentaries ask interesting questions. How does it feel to be a redhead (Rooi van aard) or a real arm-wrestling champion (Druk dit!)\, or a collector who develops a Tretchikoff obsession after buying a work on the internet (Pappa Kitsch)? SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Travelling in Southern Africa: travelogues and other objects
DESCRIPTION:Long before the advent of the colonial period\, Southern Africa was already connected through trade and migration to other parts of Africa and the Indian Ocean world and even to India and the Middle East. Human mobility took many forms\, both voluntary and forced. Voluntary movement included trade journeys\, expeditions and tourism; non-voluntary mobility encompassed the forced movement of enslaved\, indentured and displaced people. All these travellers took with them goods and ideas that have left deep traces in the region and have given shape to local societies. \nCall for Papers \nThe Netherlands has been an important node in the travelling networks between Europe and South Africa from the 17th century onwards. As a result\, it holds large parts of the archive described on their website. This volume invites authors to select and compare at least two items (objects/artefacts) drawn from two institutions that contain relevant collections: the Zuid-Afrikahuis in Amsterdam and the Wereldmuseum. Both these heritage centres hold a large number of travelogues written by European travellers in Southern Africa\, and objects from Southern Africa sent to Europe by them\, recently explored in the book exhibition\, Reizen – door de bladzijden van Zuid-Afrika. Authors may also select a third item from another collection\, if it is relevant to their project. \nThey are particularly interested in the biography of objects and artefacts\, including but not limited to travelogues\, as a methodology: what meaning did these artefacts carry in their place of origin\, what meanings were assigned to them as they travelled to European collections\, and what meanings become available when they are examined critically today? And what becomes apparent when we become attentive to what is not in the archive\, but implied or gestured at by the object? \nThe objective of this project is to provide a critical\, essayistic reflection on the act of travelling to and in Southern Africa\, by being sensitive to and critical of the power hierarchies that are often reproduced in the archives. Consequently\, they encourage authors to go beyond a mere description of the travelling records\, but also to think about the meaning and the ideas behind them. They approach the provenance of objects not only as a question of historical reconstruction in order to learn more about how objects came from Southern Africa to Europe\, but as a means of ethical inquiry: what forms of knowledge\, reparation\, or restitution (broadly understood to include the restoration of dignity\, narrative and memory) does critical engagement with these collections make possible and maybe even necessary? \nHet Zuid-Afrikahuis is inviting proposals for essayistic contributions of around 2500 to 3000 words. DESCRIPTION:Storyknife provides women with the time and space to explore their craft without distraction. Every aspect of a residency at Storyknife is steeped in a profound generosity of spirit so that each writer knows she and her work are valuable. Storyknife residents carry away both this affirmation and a living community of women writers to assist their valuable work wherever they go. \nResidencies at Storyknife in Homer\, Alaska\, are either for two or four weeks. Resident’s food and lodging is covered during the period of their residency\, but travel to and from Homer\, Alaska\, is the responsibility of the resident. Residents stay in individual cabins & dine at the main house. An on-staff chef is responsible for food preparation. \nFour week residencies: \n\nBegin on the 1st of each month and end on the 28th\, April through October.\n\nTwo week residencies: \n\nAre held in April\, June\, and August and begin on the 1st of each month and end on the 14th OR begin on the 15th and end on the 28th.\n\nEligibility (Applicants must) \n\nBe woman-identified\nBe 21 years of age or older\nApply as an individual artist\, not a collaborative group or team\nWriters who have been in residency for a minimum of two-weeks at Storyknife must wait five years before they can re-apply for another residency.\nWriters from outside of the United States are eligible to apply for residencies.\n\nApplication Fee \n\nThere is a $45 fee to apply for residency. SUMMARY:The Working Class Writers Grant
DESCRIPTION:Since 2013\, the Working Class Writers Grant has been awarded annually to speculative fiction writers who are working class\, blue-collar\, financially disadvantaged\, or homeless\, who have been historically underrepresented in speculative fiction due to financial barriers which make it hard to access the writing world. Such lack of access might include an inability to purchase a computer\, books\, and tuition\, or to attend conventions or workshops. Often\, these writers\, many of whom work more than one job\, have less time to write. The SLF seeks to bring more of these marginalized voices into speculative fiction. \nThis grant\, as with all SLF grants\, is intended to help writers working with speculative literature. Speculative literature spans the breadth of fantastic writing\, encompassing literature ranging from hard science fiction to epic fantasy\, including ghost stories\, horror\, folk and fairy tales\, slipstream\, magical realism\, and more. SUMMARY:The Art of Writing Memoir: Fourth Series with Denis Hirson
DESCRIPTION:Denis Hirson is back with four new memoir-writing workshops running from September to December. \nThe Jacana Literary Foundation\, together with Denis Hirson\, is bringing back its highly successful memoir-writing workshops for a fourth time\, but in a different way. Across four evenings\, one each in September\, October\, November and December 2026\, Denis will share his expertise in a series of engaging 90-minute online workshops. Each workshop session will focus on a different memoir before engaging in discussion with participants. \nEach workshop will take place on Zoom from 19:00 to 20:30 SAST. The total cost of all four workshops is R1500.
