SUMMARY:Writers on Writers: The Memoirists
DESCRIPTION:Aangebied deur Penguin Random House\, Tracey McDonald Publishers \nDominique Olivier en Lidia Rauch ondersoek die moed wat nodig is om ingrypende persoonlike en historiese ervarings in prosa te omskep. Olivier se Lessons from Loss: Life on the Other Side of Grief navigeer die rou nasleep van ondenkbare tragedie\, terwyl Rauch se Apartheid’s Granddaughter die swaar erfenis van ’n politieke nalatenskap verreken.

SUMMARY:Freedom from Torture: Poetry Competition
DESCRIPTION:Freedom from Torture’s biennial poetry competition is back\, which will be judged by the eminent novelist\, poet and Booker Prize winner Alan Hollinghurst and Poet Rachael Allen. \nThis year’s competition theme is Worlds into Words\, inspired by the journeys people carry within them – across countries\, across cultures\, and across the landscapes of memory and identity. It also reflects the experiences of survivors of torture\, whose journeys are not only physical but deeply psychological\, shaped by resilience\, loss\, and the search for belonging. \nFor many of the survivors they support\, coming to the UK as refugees means navigating not only a new place\, but a new language – finding ways to express experiences that are often difficult to put into words. This theme celebrates the many worlds all writers bring to their work: the stories\, cultures\, and perspectives that shape how we see and understand the world. \nYour poem might explore what it means to leave home\, to begin again\, or to carry multiple worlds within you. It could reflect on displacement or belonging\, silence or expression\, trauma or hope. As always\, the theme is open to interpretation – your entry should reflect what Worlds into Words means to you. \nFirst Prize: \n\nZoom mentoring session with Poet and Fitzcarraldo Editions editor Rachael Allen.\nTwo VIP tickets to our London Library Event.\nYour poem will be published in Freedom from Torture’s quarterly newsletter The Survivor\, circulated to some 26 000 supporters across the UK\, and on their website.\nYour poem will be printed in the London Library event programme\, circulated to 150 esteemed guests including authors\, poets\, publishers and celebrities.\nBook bundles for the winner and runners up.\nAll winners will have their poem featured on Freedom from Torture’s website with winners promoted on social media and promoted to press and media in the run up to the event.\n\nPoems can be submitted from anywhere in the world\, in any style\, with a preferred length limit of 40 lines\, and must be the entrant’s original work. Entries must not have been published\, self-published\, broadcast\, or featured among the winners in any previous competition. \nEntry fee: £5 (or £1 for under 18s) and is free for anyone with lived experience as a refugee. If you have lived experience as a refugee you can email your entry to: events@freedomfromtorture.org \nSubmission deadline: 9 October at 5pm \nFor any other queries or questions contact: events@freedomfromtorture.org \nClick here for more information.

Writers must apply for a specific session and are asked to indicate second and third choices. However\, the latter choices should be dates that would also work for the applicant. SUMMARY:Open Call: The Studios at MASS MoCA
DESCRIPTION:The Studios at MASS MoCA artist and writers residency program is embedded in one of the world’s liveliest centers for making and enjoying today’s most evocative art. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is a former factory complex surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in downtown North Adams. The Studios residency invites 10 artists at a time\, nationally and internationally\, for a residency of 2 or 4 weeks. These residencies provide essential time\, space\, and individualized support for artists to develop new work and ideas\, with their campus being a living source of research and inspiration. \nAt the Studios at MASS MoCA\, selected artists receive: \n\nPrivate\, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA\, available 24/7\nHousing (private bedroom/queen bed\, shared kitchen\, and bath) in attractive apartments directly across the street from the museum\nOne communal meal per day in the company of fellow artists-in-residence\nAn optional studio visit with a MASS MoCA curator or a guest curator\n1 year access to Assets for Artists Online Workshops on artist career development\n3 months of MASS MoCA member benefits\, including free access to the museum’s galleries\, and discounts on performing arts events and museum store purchases\, plus additional access to The Clark Art Institute while in residence\nThe opportunity to connect with a cohort of international creative peers.\nChances to share your work either through Open Studios\, artist presentations to your fellow residents\, and/or studio visits (all events are optional)\n\nEligibility: They welcome applications from artists at all career stages\, income levels\, and geographic locations. They primarily seek applications from visual artists (painters\, sculptors\, installation artists\, photographers\, video/new media artists\, fiber artists\, printmakers\, etc.) and writers in all literary disciplines. They discourage applications from dancers\, musicians\, and other performers because our studios are only well suited for artists who work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed) and who don’t require space for rehearsal / movement arts. Groups/collectives may apply to work on joint projects in the visual and literary arts. The studios have light-duty ventilation\, so an art practice generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated. \nCost/Funding: The already subsidized “full” residency fee is $650/week (it’s $1000+/week of actual costs to operate the residency). However\, every applicant in the regular application pool may opt to be considered for a full-ride fellowship and/or need-based financial aid to lower this fee even more. Visit their Financial Aid & Fellowships page to learn more about their many funding opportunities. If an artist can pay in full\, that helps their program be able to off-set costs to offer more fellowships to those with financial need. \nDeadline: 1 November 2026 at 11:59pm EST. \nClick here for more information.
